Lamination

Photo showing LaminationThe lamination process is quite simple and is usually one of these two methods – the pouch lamination or the roll lamination, with either method the same principle apply, the item is put between the substrate and then put through heated rollers with pressure applied ensuring the laminating film encapsulates the item completely which is now bonded to both its sides and the item then becomes tear-proof and waterproof.

As a result laminating can prevent items becoming sun damaged, wrinkled, stained, smudged and/or marked by grease, fingerprints, etc. so there are many items that benefit from lamination. Lamination involves applying a film of plastic onto the printed sheet in order to enhance, protect or preserve them and when applied in one of the various finishes it creates different effects.

Advantages of Lamination

  • Provides a highly professional, extra smooth finish, as well as protecting the surface from markings such as fingerprints and scratches.
  • Ideal for Brochures, Folders, Menus, Postcards, etc.
  • Especially recommended if the design in question features a dark colour or the ink is in a heavy ink coverage area as it removes the danger that the ink may come off slightly if rubbed.

The two most popular types of lamination are gloss or matt.

Gloss Lamination

Gloss lamination provides a wide range of uses across the whole spectrum of printed products and the properties and strength and low cost make it suitable for many applications, it is more high profile as it adds a high gloss sheen so it is often used on brochures, catalogues, folders or menus.

Matt Lamination

Matt lamination gives a more subtle effect and coupled with its smooth texture offers a very high quality image to brochures and book covers though it is also particularly suited to surfaces which need to be easily read.  But matt lamination can be prone to scuffing and should be handled with care.
