Thermography is a process of engraving by creating a raised finish to your prints.
Thermography is a process which involves applying powder to wet ink while the ink is wet and then heated and it was first developed by letterpress printers as a more cost effective and practical alternative to die stamping as it doesn’t require the making of costly plates or dies.
Thermography machines consist of three sections connected by a conveyor belt. The first section is when the printed sheets are passed through a powder hopper allowing the powder to stick to the wet ink, the excess powder from the non-printing areas is then vacuumed off and the sheet continues along the belt into an oven where there it becomes fixed, leaving you with your glossy ‘orange peel’ effect.
Thermographic printing lends itself well to the following print and stationery items – business cards, letterheads, invitations, note cards, greeting cards and certificate printing.
It can be used in conjunction with litho printing, foiling and embossing and is an excellent stylistic choice required for elegant printed items that make a statement.
